ABOUT US

Who We Are & What We Believe

PFLAG PTC will be a welcoming and inclusive place of gathering. We will recognize the essential humanity of all people and the need to feel embraced, cared for, and respected. We will strive to acknowledge all who come to the meetings for who they are and where they come from.

THE BEGINNING OF PFLAG PTC

PFLAG Peachtree City is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals, their families, and allies. Officially becoming a PFLAG chapter on March 30, 2017, our journey began five years earlier when Fayetteville resident Debbie Wright invited a group of friends, all with gay children, to gather for mutual support and connection. This inaugural meeting on March 22, 2012, was attended by eight adults representing four families, laying the foundation for what would become a vital resource in our community.

Recognizing the need for an official chapter, Debbie contacted PFLAG’s Gulf Region director, who connected her with PFLAG Atlanta board members Tori and David Stivers, also residents of Fayette County. Their support and guidance were instrumental in helping the group grow and establish itself within the PFLAG network.

The group began hosting regular support meetings and, over time, continued to expand its reach and services. In 2017, PFLAG Atlanta generously offered to donate their entire lending library to the newly formed Peachtree City chapter, further strengthening the resources available to our members.

Through the collaboration of passionate volunteers, other PFLAG chapters, and supportive organizations, PFLAG Peachtree City has grown into a thriving community dedicated to education, advocacy, and fostering inclusion. We are proud to provide a safe, welcoming space for LGBTQIA+ individuals, their families, and allies to connect, learn, and grow together.

THE STORY OF PFLAG NATIONAL

PFLAG (originally standing for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) National was founded in 1972 with the simple act of a mother, Jeanne Manford, publicly supporting her gay son. PFLAG (www.pflag.org) is the nation’s largest family and ally organization.

In 2014, the organization officially changed its name from "Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays" to, simply, PFLAG. This change was made to accurately reflect PFLAG members, those PFLAG serves, and the inclusive work PFLAG has been doing for decades.

PFLAG has 400 chapters and 200,000 supporters crossing multiple generations of American families in major urban centers, small cities, and rural areas in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced, and serviced by PFLAG National, located in Washington, D.C., the National Board of Directors and 13 volunteer Regional Directors.
